I’m rewatching the Wire. It’s my all-time favorite television show. It’s becoming that show, that many have heard of or acknowledged it’s existence and either loved or have neglected to see it for some reason. My hope, if anything, that it doesn’t (or hasn’t already) become stigmatized as being a hip or cult-classic in a negative way thing, but recognized for its awesome writing, producing, directing, and usually great casting and directing. It’s raw and authentic. It doesn’t aim to please like network TV or truly most rating-based television does.
Surely, in the long time of having my tumblr, and myspaces, and livejournals, dating way too far back I start daily or weekly blogging endeavors that never end up panning out. So who knows, maybe this will be the only post, or the first of 60. It’s very likely I won’t make it, with my final semester of grad school starting tomorrow.
Tommy and I said we’re gonna start rewatching the Wire. Wire Wednesday. His friend Matt is doing the same, but making comics to go along with each episode. My intent is to upload a screenshot, a quote, or some reflections on the episode for each episode I watch. It probably won’t pan out. Tommy and I may even abandon Wire Wednesdays, as on our first night, I called off sick.
Season 1. Episode 1 “The Target” …when it’s not your turn… – McNulty
This episode is always the toughest to sell new viewers on. There’s a lot going on; many new characters from different places and for different purposes. You see the set up for why the Baltimore PD start targeting Avon Barksdale and Stringer Bell, you see bubbles rationale for helping out, and Bunk and McNulty’s relationship forming. You see how politics runs through it all, drugs runs through it all, and chain-of-command runs through it all.
Chain-of-command is an interesting thing. Everyone has someone higher to report to and take orders from. If you step out of line, and go around or above that person, you may hurt other and get hurt.
I like the quote “Fucking horse is out of the barn door, right?” Might as well do it all. Can’t go half-way. McNulty let out the horse, might as well let em all out.
Excited to rewatch all five seasons.
